Can one app handle both a shared shopping list and family expenses?

Last updated: 2026-08-29

Yes. Family Magnet's Pantry puts both on the same board: a shopping list anyone in the family can add to, and expenses totalled by category. Check the list before you head out, tick things off when you're back, and record what you spent while you're there — no switching between two apps, and no entering the same purchase twice.

Why most people end up with two apps

Shared lists and household budgeting are usually sold as two different tools: one answers “what do we still need?”, the other answers “where did the money go this month?”. So one trip to the shop gets entered in two places, and sooner or later the two stop matching — at which point people give up on both.

What it looks like on one board

Anyone in the family can add an item to the shopping list, and whoever is out can see it appear while they are still in the shop; they tick things off as they buy them. Expenses are totalled by category, so where this month's money went is visible at a glance. Both live on the family's board, so everyone who joined can use them.

The part that matters for families abroad

Amounts are shown in the currency of each person's device region, and the interface follows each person's device language. When a child abroad and a parent at home share one board, each reads their own language and their own currency while looking at the same set of expenses.

How to do it

  1. 1. Create a board

Sign up with an email address. About a minute.

  2. 2. Bring the family in

One six-digit code per person. They type it into a browser and are full members — no signup, no app to install.

  3. 3. Anyone can add to the list

Put things on the shopping list as you think of them; whoever is out will see them.

  4. 4. Record what you spent, on the same page

Expenses are totalled by category, so at the end of the month there is no second app to go and check.

Where the limits are

Family Magnet's expenses are there to show a family where its money went — they are not a bill-splitting tool. It does not work out who owes whom or how to settle up. Multi-currency means each person sees amounts in their own device's currency; it is not a live exchange-rate conversion. If you need strict split-the-bill accounting, you still want a dedicated tool for that.
